Info
The song selection for Runaway started simply: three songs that Eleanor McCain simply couldn’t live without.
The New Brunswick native found it a tough, but comforting challenge.
“I’m drawn to songs that emphasize the human connection, most of which happen to be love songs.”
With producer Matt Dusk and co-producer Shelly Berger helping with the selection, there are eleven songs -- some familiar classics, others soon-to-be-discovered contemporary gems – that are lushly orchestrated by Berger, commencing with the title track, “Runaway,” a number that accentuates the infatuation felt between partners in the early stages of romance.
“The song is about when you fall in love,” notes Eleanor. “You just want to run away and do everything with your partner.”
This tender joy is further reflected in Eleanor’s take on “Always On My Mind.”
“This was one of the initial three songs that Matt had me pick,” says Eleanor. “I love what it says, because there are certain aspects of that songs that I’ve experienced in my own relationships, where I’ve been there and can relate.”
For a mature take on love, Eleanor says “Both Sides Now” is irresistible.
“When you’re younger, you have one idea about love – maybe your head is in the clouds a bit about it. You go on with life, experience it and maybe realize that it’s something else altogether, something deeper.”
And when it comes to intimacy, Eleanor is thrilled to include numbers that perfectly expresses the impact of love and meeting someone: “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” Dan Fogelberg’s “Longer” and “To Make You Feel My Love,” the latter a duet with Matt Dusk.
“The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” has an ebb and flow I’ve loved since the first time I’ve heard Roberta Flack’s hit version, with a simplicity and wonder in the lyrics that I find very touching.
For “To Make You Feel My Love,” Matt’s suggestion that we do a completely different take and record it as a duet was perfect, as it brings a new dimension to the song’s meaning – a man and a woman singing it to each other.
With other love songs ranging from John Legend’s uptempo “Save Room” to the classic Gerry & The Pacemakers’ hit “Don’t Let The Sun Catch You Crying;” from Stephen Bishop’s lovely ballad “On And On” to Billy Joel’s immortal “Just The Way You Are;” and Sting’s magical “Fields Of Gold,” Eleanor McCain delivers emotional performances about love in its many guises, an intimate tribute to the emotions that are universal.
Lose yourself in Runaway and Eleanor McCain’s striking interpretations of love in all its musical splendour.
